I learned about the science writing field— which focuses on sharing complex information with a general audience— after many years of struggling to find a career that would reconcile scientific and humanitarian interests, thanks to a helpful and encouraging supervisor. Even then, I wasn’t quite sure how to define my long-term career goals or strategies to get there. There’s a ton of information out there and so many directions to take the skills you learn in writing about science. But I could never find a single source that concisely summed up where to go for questions, resources, jobs, and more. So, I hope this will serve as a useful tool for emerging science writers and seasoned professionals alike.When I first got involved, I took the term “science writing” quite literally. I was confused. I want to do more than write, I thought. But folks in this field tend to use it as a catch-all term for anything involving science communication. I’m guessing that’s because all science media tends to have some aspect of science writing as its foundation. Producing a podcast, documentary, or even an illustration still involves basic concepts of learning, scripting, reading scientific articles, and communicating with experts.There are several dedicated science writing programs at the graduate level, For folks working on their undergraduate degree, whether it is in a science field or among the humanities like journalism, the most important thing to do is to find opportunities to write about science. That can include working for the school newspaper, taking a writing class geared toward researchers, or even starting your own blog.
